Historic Kiel
Just a sample of the kinds of historic photos available in the Edwin J. Majkrzak Historical Research Center at Kiel Public Library. Stop in and see what else we have!
We're a full-service public library located along the Sheboygan River in downtown Kiel, Wisconsin. We offer a wide array of resources, services and technology. We have books, audio books, films, magazines, newspapers, computer software, and an extensive local history collection on-site and online. We're a WIFI hotspot, and we also have hi-speed, public access computers, along with a photocopier, fax machine and a microfilm reader. We've got programs for youth, teens, adults and families, Wii gaming, and a well-equipped meeting room. Most importantly, we've got a talented and friendly staff ready to assist you and open to your suggestions. Just ask, and we'll try to help.
Olive Kitteridge (Elizabeth Stout) - A collection of 13 stories that all take place in a small, seaside village in Maine. The central character, Olive, is a strong-willed and very complex, retired math teacher who deplores the changes in her town and in the world at large. Always interesting, if not always likable, Olive eventually comes to a deeper understanding of herself and those she loves. I was sorry when this book ended - Nanette
On the Shoulders of Giants: My Journey Through the Harlem Renaissance (Kareen Abdul-Jabbar) - Soon to be released as a major documentary produced by Spike Lee, this autobiography explores former Bucks player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's personal journey to become the man he is today--a basketball superstar, jazz enthusiast, historian, and African-American icon. The reader can't help but come away from this book impressed and inspired.
Orchard (Larry Watson) - The June 2008 selection for the KPL book discussion group, this moving novel takes place in Door County, Wisconsin in the 1950s. Ned Weaver is a talented but self-centered artist who make a practice of bedding his female models. The beautiful Sonja, a Norwegian immigrant and co-owner of a nearby apple orchard, agrees to pose nude for Ned, which enrages her husband Henry. Passion, jealousy, heartbreak, and loss - it's all here in this short, but memorable, page turner.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (J.K. Rowling) - The seventh and final Potter book is everything true devotees have been waiting and hoping for. Harry, Ron and Hermione take a wizard road trip around Europe to find the seven horcruxes, before Voldemort finds them first! A totally satisfying read.
What We're Watching
Leslie Sansone's W alk Away the Pounds (3 workouts in 1 DVD) - This is one of several dozen health and fitness DVDs we recently acquired with the help of a grant by the Calumet Area Community Health Foundation. This well-done 3-part DVD includes gentle warm-ups and tips for using weights and pacing yourself. Walk Away the Pounds is an enjoyable way to say fit and, as she says, "keep your body health and young for years to come."
An Inconvenient Truth: A Global Warning - Whatever you may think about the science behind the global warming threat, this Academy Award winning documentary by Al Gore is certainly thought-provoking. Gore discusses some of the myths and misperceptions about climate change, and then shares some possible responses for the human race to consider.
What You Never Dream - The award-winning, locally produced film by Ron Holder and Ron Haese, with characters played by KHS students and local officials, about the real consequences of drunk driving. This is an amazing film, and not just because we know a lot of the people in it!
Let's Face It: Women Explore Their Aging Faces - Seven women age 48 to 63 speak honestly and with wry humor about the reality of the sags and bags and lines that show up on their faces. An enlightening and comforting film about the aging process.
The Gun in Betty Lou's Handbag (Touchstone) with Penelope Ann Miller - a demure librarian learns how to stand up for her herself after she finds a gun in her purse.
Gus (Disney) with Don Knotts - a football team gets a new player. So what if he's a mule? At least he can kick!
